Trial date set for Atatiana Jefferson’s death three years later

Three years have passed since I entered medical school in early October at the age of 28. Atatiana Jefferson killed.After several setbacks, the Jefferson family is finally hoping to see justice for their loved ones.

Jefferson’s neighbor, James Smith, claims to have called the Fort Worth Police Department’s non-emergency number in the early hours of October 12, 2019. Jefferson Her nephew was babysitting but was left open all night.

“I called the police department and verified welfare. No domestic violence, no arguments, nothing for them to worry about as long as they brought a gun to my neighbor’s house.” Smith told WFAA-8.

Reportedly, when officers arrived for a welfare check, they searched the perimeter of the house and saw a person standing inside the residence near a window. and shot Jefferson.

According to the arrest warrant, Jefferson’s nephew told authorities he took a handgun from his handbag and pointed it at the window when he heard noises outside. But police said she was within her right to defend herself.

Released body camera video showed Dean in uniform, but he didn’t announce himself before firing a single fatal shot.

Two days after the shooting, Dean resigned from the police force before being formally charged.

Dean’s trial dates have been set and canceled several times. This year he was scheduled for January, but was reset for May and rescheduled again for June. At each turn, there are conflicts over the availability of expert witnesses, Dean’s lead lawyer who is struggling with illness, and even a lawyer over a scheduled vacation.

The judge who was supposed to oversee the trial was then dismissed in June, according to FOX4.

In 2020, the Jefferson family launched the “Atatiana Project.” Ashley Carr, Jefferson’s older sister, told her NBCDFW that the nonprofit will expose children to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) in hopes of inspiring them to love science like Jefferson. The house was owned by the sister’s deceased mother. No one lives there now, but North Carr says he came to stay there when he visited Texas.

“She lives on just by us saying her name. We keep her alive in our hearts,” she said. “That’s what Tay tells us. Everyone knew her name.”

Jury selection will be made in advance on November 28, the Monday after the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
