“I love working with my family because we are all together, helping each other, thinking things through, spending time together,” Shanté tells ESSENCE. “And in the end, money is created.”

This line is dedicated to and inspired by my youngest daughter. CoriAfter being diagnosed with lupus as a child, she started losing her hair. She was supported by her famous parents and her siblings, all of whom started wearing scarves to boost her confidence.

“My family made me feel comfortable in the situation I was facing and turned it into fashion,” she says.

Soon, the family realized they had been drawn to wearing scarves of all kinds over the years, and that’s when the light bulb went out.

“We wear all these scarves, but they don’t have names. We’re just buying tons and tons,” Snoop recalls. “We are a family of business people.

Introducing the Broadus collection of silk scarves in six bold styles and two sizes. In collaboration with popular beauty and cosmetics company Annie International, BroadusCollection.comAnd everyone can wear it, as exemplified by the campaign featuring Snoop, Chante, Cori, and their sons Cordell and Cordell.

We spoke with Snoop, Shante, and Cori about this new line, what they’re doing as a family, including travel, and the business they’re building as a brood.

ESSENCE: How did the Broadus collection of luxury silk scarves in collaboration with Annie come about?

Shante Broadus: We all started wearing scarves around 2006.

Cori Broadus: I was diagnosed with lupus when I was 6 years old. For those of you who don’t know, this is basically an autoimmune disease where organs attack each other. So my immune system is very weak. I experienced hair loss, so one day my mom came home with a bunch of scarves and we were playing with them and trying different methods.

Cori, the inspiration for this collection, how do you feel about the impending opportunity to be worn by people outside your family?

Cori: It feels good to be the inspiration behind this collection. Hmm. Doctors told me it could be cancer, it could be this… part of this whole thing. I think it’s dope.

Snoop, when it comes to scarves and hair, why was it so important to you to be as versatile as your hair as black?

Snoop Dogg: I come from the 70’s, when hairstyles, fashion, everything mattered. It was more important for men than for women. It’s about growing the way I was raised. I was inspired by many men I saw in my youth. They were very well dressed, their hair was always right, and they could talk [sic]I was the only one who emulated all the hairstyles I saw as a kid, all the hairstyles I saw from my uncles and buddies. Then I had a conversation with James Brown once about keeping my hair long without cutting it. So when it comes to my hair, some of those things go into my thought process when it comes to my looks and styles.

Is this the perfect collaboration for you?

Prying: Well, for years we wore someone else’s scarf. My wife and I would wake up in the morning and put it on. Then it seemed like the whole family was wearing them, but we weren’t in business. I realized that it has to be how we make it a business.

Speaking of family things to do, you guys did some great things recently. Family trip to Bora Bora, and Snoop said it was your first real one. What did you like about this experience?

Prying: I just needed to escape. I’ve worked hard but never experienced what a vacation is, first of all I wanted to do it with his wife. Because she’s always there for me, going to shows and traveling and letting me do all the things I wanted to do. She won’t complain just let me go. So mostly let me find time to spend time with her. So if I asked her, she was a loving, caring mom. Before I knew it, it had changed to a couples retreat, but I don’t object because my family loves it. I know how to handle that kind of shit. But I just want her to be happy, and she took her vacation like four times this year, which made me even happier. In 30 years she was one, in three months she was four.

what? ! Where else have you been?

Prying: I’ve been to Hawaii, San Diego, and the Bahamas. I have arranged things. It’s contagious now.

I asked if it would be an annual event.

Cori: It’s monthly at this point.

Prying: It’s a couple’s retreat because everyone is there with their special other halves and all is kept at peace. Everyone will laugh at you if you throw them in the air or throw them sideways. “Motherfucker, I’m not talking to you!”

How about you, Mr. Shantae? What is your favorite place on a trip with your family?

Shante: We love spending time together. I always love family time. It’s all fun because the kids are all grown up and don’t have to kick it with us anymore. I love it.

Cori: Now it’s “When is your next trip? Where are you going?” I am spoiled now.

Prying: Actually, we’re going on another trip! We’re going to Vegas to see Usher perform. I just went to Chris Brown concerts, went to Usher, and all that stuff.

You have opened the door to all these experiences. I like that!

Prying: I can finally live. I feel like my career has always been about living and acting for others. It rubbed off on her wife, it rubbed off on all of us, and started caring about everyone but us. It’s tax time and we’re so far in the pit we gave these people all this money and they don’t do anything! So I had to leave my business in order to travel. It started with me hiring her wife as manager. She let her run her facility and arranged everything in their own order so that when people come to this building they respect it. Not for me, but for what my wife put in. To make it a professional environment, a professional environment. Jeff Bezos, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Jimmy Iovine were here and impressed. It’s a professional business we run and she’s why.

What else would you like to know about the Broadus Collection scarf line?

Shante: A colorful and fun muffler. This is a family run business and we just want everyone to support us. It’s all about kori.

Cori: I was embarrassed to show my hair and deal with what I was going through just by piggybacking on my mom, but I feel like I’ve made it cool to live in your situation and not look at it in a bad way. I will.

Prying: The beauty of the line is that the whole family can wear this – even grandma can wear it around her neck the old-fashioned way. There are so many different ways you can wear these scarves and they are a fashion statement. We don’t just put together a few patterns and say, “Buy them.” The way they feel, the way they package it, me and his wife showing him and hers in front of it, my daughter can wear it, my grandson can wear it. It’s for everyone. This is universal. This is a beautiful part of the collection that we have more planned for.
