Samrat Prithviraj to Runway 34: Movie Stars on List A, Class B box office, what worries Bollywood?

In an article published recently in the entertainment section of the newspaper, producer Aditya Chopra is allegedly very upset after Jaeshbhai Jordaar’s box office failures and Samrat Prithviraj (two films produced by Yashraj Films). According to the author of the article Subhash Ja, sources in Yash Raj are looking for culprits Akshay Kumar for the failure of Samrat Prithviraj. A source reportedly commented: “He didn’t want to listen. The film required special concentration. He didn’t even grow a real mustache, because he was involved in other projects at the same time … why didn’t he do only this project and lay out everything possible for that? ”

While we’ll never know if Aditya Chopra is really furious or not Akshaya Kumara should be blamed, obviously, there seems to be an outflow of Hindi movie audiences. Films with list A stars, which at least would have paid for themselves a few years ago, are now struggling to break even.

Gautam Jane of Ormax Media said in an interview: “After the pandemic, the audience of the subway multiplex now clearly divides the films into two buckets: for viewing on the big screen and for viewing on any other screen. Since most Hindi movies released to date except Sooryavanshi, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 or Gangubai Kathyavadi fall under the second bucket, Hindi movies did not set fire to the box office.

Samrat Prithviraj gave YRF another flop.

This trend has affected not only Aksha, but also other male actors. Ranvir SinghThe marginal level of manic energy during the advancement failed to save the state of Jaeshbhai Jordaar and 83. Shahid KapoorJersey earned about 27.9 crore, according to the latest updated figures, runway 34 Ajay Devgna did not pay off by almost 20 crore, and Heropanti 2 with Tiger Shrof in the lead role did not reach even half the mark in terms of recovery. Samrat Prithviraj was made with an estimated budget of 200-300 crores (depending on who you are talking to), but reportedly he didn’t even earn 100 crores in rental. Dhaakad of Kangana Ranaut fronted also stunningly showed cash fees despite a big budget. In addition to the fleeting success of Kashmiri filesGangubai Kathiawadi, who earned more than 129 crores domestically, and recently, Bul Bhulaya 2 with Kartik Aryan in the lead role, no other Hindi film released this year has survived.

The change in dynamics may have begun when films starring actors Rajkumar Rao, Ayushman Hurran and Pankaj Tripati became successful in the box office. True, well-being, high-concept films have almost become a subgenre in Bollywood, and dependence on three Khans, one Devgn and one Kumar has begun to wane over the years. Much more diversity has entered the business, and many films are dedicated to women, featuring talented actors like Vida BalanTaopsi Pannu and Kangana Ranaut also did good deeds.

But the success of films like Pushpa and KGF 2 is there opened a new discussion. In an effort to make more politically correct films or films with a social message, have Bollywood filmmakers left the element of “suspension of disbelief” that made our major films special?

Speaking of the success of KGF 2 and the overall dubbing of southern films, the actor Sanjay Dat said in an interview: “I’m not saying that harsh movies or rum comas are bad. But why have we forgotten about our audience from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Rajasthan, which make up the bulk of our audience. Corporatization is good, but it shouldn’t interfere with our taste in cinema. ” Opposing, Karan Johar said in an interview with Film Companion: “When I read KGF reviews, I think if we had done that, we would have been lynched. I loved it with all my heart. But what if we did that? I think we are not given inclinations either, and we try to be someone else. “

However, if you look closely, successful films have one more factor in common. The hard work of his stars and crew is visible. Audiences can often smell the ridiculous work from the trailer itself. No amount of harsh editing can disguise a weak / repetitive story or bad acting. Alia BhatHer sincerity and talent were evident when she turned into Gangubai. Alu Arjun turned his appearance and completely devoted to dialogue and exaggerated manners of his character. Ram Charan and Jr. NTR danced, fought with animated tigers and performed the most spectacular tricks, convincing us of their patriotism and valor in RRR.

Meanwhile, Akshay Kumar became the subject of memes comparing his appearance and the presentation of dialogues in Samrat Prithviraj with his comic character in Housefull 4. Perhaps this sounded a death knell for the film even before its release. Not to mention how much older he looked and actually appeared for Manusha Chhilar, who plays his wife. On the runway 34 Ajay Devgn played another stylish, thoughtful but controversial man, and Tiger Shrof, frankly, needs to invent himself, because many times his press can pretend to be an acting talent.

Another possible reason Bollywood movies with A-list stars are not available for rent because we no longer need to go to the movie theater to see them. Think about it. Yet, maybe ten years ago or even less, we didn’t see or have access to the movie star’s life daily. We went to the movies to watch their movies once or twice a year and bought movie magazines to read more about them. But with the explosion of social media and the flourishing of ubiquitous paparazzi who seem to be watching celebrities everywhere, from movie parties to funerals, the movie star’s exclusivity is rapidly diminishing. This thrill of being able to see them on the movie screen after a few months of waiting is no more.

The pandemic combined with advanced content on OTT platforms has also changed the game. Perhaps viewers realized that movies like Minnal Murali or shows like Rocket Boys, Pataal Lok and Scam 1992 were extremely entertaining without the presence of a single star that could be obtained at the bank. In terms of quality and novelty, the bar is raised high, and if it is not reached, the audience will not make it to the theater.

For years, Bollywood has enjoyed an advantage over regional language film industries. Although filmmakers like Mani Ratnam, Adur Gopalakrishnan or actors like RejinicanMahanlal and Kamal Hassan enjoyed Indian popularity and respect. Bollywood has always given southern artists a “chance” to gain true fame or success by starring in a Hindi film.

Perhaps the pandemic and the changing manner of content consumption globally are also blurring the boundaries between movies in different languages. We can finally head to the Indian film industry, where talented artists are crossing language barriers to find unifying stories that may appeal to most viewers. In five years, Pan-Indian films could become the main way to make films, with a smaller budget of regional films or Bollywood films that continue to have their own market.

Either way, an audience with a more diverse, demanding and hopefully sophisticated palette can only mean the best films for all of us. Lots of high-budget films are expected this year and next, and hopefully viewers will give their favorite stars another chance and return to the cinema and queue for popcorn.
