Ponniyin Selvan: Thota Tharrani explains how he created the Chola empire for Mani Ratnam’s film

As the director’s release date Mani RatnamWith the long-awaited film Ponniyin Selvan 1 approaching, the makers have doubled down on their promotional efforts. On Wednesday, the maker released a behind-the-scenes video. This explains the enormous effort that went into creating the Chola Empire.
Renowned production designer Thota Tharrani says he is working with Mani Ratnam for the first time in 28 years. He worked with Ratnam early in the latter’s career. Popular works of the duo include Nayakan, Thalapathy and Thiruda Thiruda.
In a video, Thota Tharrani reveals that extensive research has been conducted to obtain details to recreate the lost glory of the Chola empire. Everything from the stationery used by the Cholas to their lavish home décor was carefully researched for accuracy. He also said he obtained some of the major architectural details by studying the temples built by the Cholas. “We’ve already taken something…it’s an epic right now. It’s a movie,” he added.
The film is based on an epic period novel written by iconic author Kalki Krishnamurthy. The five-volume novel Ponniyin Selvan tells the story of Arulmozhi Varman who eventually became his Rajaraja Chola I.
Vikram, the main character in this movie, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Kati, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sovita Dripala, Prabhu, R Sarasukumar, Vikram Prabhu, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Rahman, R Parthiban.
The PS1 is set to hit theaters on September 30th.
