Mumbai builder arrested for raping actress over marriage

Mumbai police on Tuesday arrested a builder on suspicion of raping an actress on the pretext of marrying her.

Defendant Aditya Ajay Kapoor had met a 24-year-old actress who had worked in several Telugu films at a mutual friend’s house in suburban Bandra.

They exchanged phone numbers and kept in touch. After a while, they became close to each other, the source said.

“Kapoor maintained a physical relationship with the woman by promising to marry her,” the official said, citing the First Information Report (FIR). Kapoor raped her in the Kaufparade area and at his residence in Goa.

“When the actress proposed marriage, he insisted that she maintain a physical relationship with him. When she refused, he began to abuse and assault her. They sent obscene messages to her parents’ phone number and threatened to kill her. Fed up with the harassment, the woman approached the police,” he said.

The rape suspect FIR was initially registered with the NM Joshi Marg police station, but was later transferred to the Cuffe Parade police station because the crime was committed under its jurisdiction.

Kapoor was arrested under various sections of the Indian Criminal Code and Information Technology Act, including rape, officials said, adding further investigations were ongoing.
