Kidde smoke alarm campaign warns against fire safety inequities

“The work I create always tells a deeper story about the cultural and community issues of my subject,” Adams said in a statement shared with ESSENCE. “This piece tells the story of how Bronx residents can work together to ensure that devastating fires never happen again. It’s my little way to help protect myself and learn that I can live safely and securely in my own home,” he added.

In the Bronx, the 19-story Twin Parks Towers Northeast Apartment building suffered a devastating fire in January. Killed 17 people, including 8 children. Fire department officials said a faulty electric space heater was to blame. Most of the victims died as a result of the rapid spread of smoke from his two doors which were left open, even though the law requires them to be closed.
