Jay Ellis doesn’t think a Top Gun: Maverick sequel is in the works, but he’s sure audiences will welcome it

Jay Ellis accepts he could be wrong, but he doesn’t believe there will be a sequel to the movie Top Gun: Maverick.
PEOPLE met the now 40-year-old actor at the Academy Museum Gala in LA on Saturday night. During the conversation, they discussed the possibility of his third Top Gun movie.
He was Lieutenant Ruben Payback Fitch in a box office hit released earlier this year, but he admitted to knowing nothing about potential sequel projects.
Ellis shared an exclusive statement with People: “I haven’t heard anything, so if you know anything please let me know. No way. What do I know about this?” It probably will, and this may be the case.
To be clear, we all want to work together. We had a great time and would love to do it again someday. Spending more time with Tom Cruise means the world to us. So I have no doubt all of us will show up if we get the chance to do it again.
On May 27, Top Gun: Maverick hits theaters and has already grossed over $1.4 billion worldwide at the box office.
The film’s plot centers on Pete Maverick Mitchell (Cruise) mentoring a cadre of Top Gun alumni in preparation for a unique mission. Other cast members have also hinted at a possible sequel.
Top Gun: Maverick’s cast accomplished some daring feats during filming, and Cruise, now 60, is in talks to become the first person to perform a spacewalk outside the International Space Station for the film It is rumored to be inside.
