Isabelle Huppert, Marion Cotillard cut hair to support female protesters

Paris: Several French movie stars including Isabelle Huppert, Juliette Binoche and Marion Cotillard cut their hair in an Instagram video in solidarity with Iranian female protesters.

The video was released on Wednesday, AFP reported.

“The Iranian people are risking their lives to protest in front of women. You deserve our support,” said the message accompanying the video on Instagram.

“Again and again, we cannot help but condemn this terrible crackdown,” he added.

In addition, Charlotte Rampling and Jane Birkin, who have deep ties to France, also appear.

This comes a day after more than 1,000 French film experts signed a petition to “support Iranian women’s uprising”.

protests in iran

Nationwide protests in Iran took place Sept. 16, days after the notorious moral police detained a Kurdish Iranian on suspicion of violating rules requiring women to wear hijabs and modest clothing. It began after 22-year-old Mahsa Amini was pronounced dead on the same day.

Anger then flared up at her funeral, triggering the largest wave of protests in Iran in nearly three years. The crackdown has killed dozens of demonstrators and arrested hundreds.

The protests have also spread to schools, with video footage shared by Kurdish rights group Hengaw showing female students demonstrating in two cities in Amini’s home state of Kurdistan.

At least 92 protesters have died so far, according to the Oslo-based Iranian Human Rights Organization (IHR), despite internet outages and blocking of WhatsApp, Instagram and other online services. We are working on the death toll.
