A mysterious tree-like villain was spotted in the trailer for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, leaving fans scratching their head at who they could be. A new set of figures released by McFarlane Toys reveals the identity of the character as King Kordax, wielder of the Black Trident and a key figure in why Arthur Curry was expelled from Atlantis in the comics:
While perhaps odd that a green creature with bark-like skin would live underwater, his design is a nod to King Kordax’s comic origin. Born with grotesque green skin and blonde hair, Kordax becomes a pariah in Atlantis, abandoned in the ocean and only able to survive by his ability to talk to marine life. This led many in Atlantis to believe any baby with blonde hair was cursed, leading to them abandoning Arthur Curry at Mercy Reef as a baby. It’s unclear if Kordax will serve a similar role in Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom, but it certainly seems he’ll be an influential force.
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, and Blue Beetle have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom still slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
