‘Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom’ Director Reveals Reason Behind Multiple Rounds Of Reshoots

Fans have been worried about the quality of Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom due to the large amount of reshoots the film received. However, director James Wan comments that he feels these claims are greatly exaggerated.
It’s no secret that Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom has had a troubled development. Across 5 years and several DC Studios regime changes it would be impossible not to have one. One of the main examples people point to when worrying about the DC Universe sequel is the reported 3 rounds of reshoots, which they say is a sign of poor quality. Yet according to the film’s director James Wan, the multiple rounds were simply caused by the schedule of their actors:
“We have big actors in this movie, and everyone’s schedule is really hard,” Wan told EW. “So, we had to break up our shooting schedule into sections. We’ll shoot a bit here now, because this actor’s available, and then we’ll do another shoot now, because this guy’s available. People are like, ‘Oh, they’re doing a whole bunch of different shoots!’ No. If we actually combined them all together, it’s actually not that many number of days at all.”
James Wan’s words certainly assuage some fears fans have for Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom. However, the film certainly has large shoes to fill for DC Studios. With its predecessor breaking a billion and the DC Universe being subjected to flop after flop at the box office, it seems as though this movie is sink or swim for Jason Momoa’s Aquaman.
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, and Blue Beetle have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom still slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
